The Western States Horse Expo LOVES our artists. Your work hangs in our living-rooms and bedrooms and sits on our dressers and tables. The spirit of the horse seeps from your creations and fills the spaces where we go to be comforted, buoyed up, feel light hearted or just rest. This year the Equine Dream Art Show was welcomed artists whose primary subjects are our dog friends, to honor our expanded venue which catered to our dogie friends and their owners. Horses and dogs, a "new" idea as old as time!
We know that artists often dedicate themselves to their talent long before their talent will financially sustain them. With that in mind and as a way of showing our appreciation to the various artists who submit their works for judging at the WSHE Art Show, a limited number of low priced, reduced space (10' X 5') booths in the immediate area of the art show were available to artist who had submitted work to the Equine Dream Show. I am pleased to say everyone felt the experiment was a success and we will be offering these small, premiere selling locations again next year. To qualify for one of these limited spaces, at least one piece of your work must be submitted and accepted to the 2011 Art Show, so start planning your project now and get it in early because the spaces are already in demand. Looking forward to seeing what surprises and new talent the 2011 show will unveil.

On Site Director, WSHE Art Show
Astounding, life like charcoal pencil drawing,” Bolero,” by artist Glynnis Miller of Clarkdale, Arizona wins 2010 Show Championship at the Western States Horse Expo Equine Dream Art Show in Sacramento, California.
With over one hundred and fifty entries, show manager, Donna Snyder-Smith reported that quality was high in all categories and Judge Deborah Russell, an art teacher and graphic designer from Reno, Nevada with a Masters in Art Education had her work cut out for her deciding her winners.
Noting good sales numbers, Donna commented, “People are beginning to catch on to the best kept secret of the WSHE; the incredibly good deals to be had from artists who submit work for the competition. I've made a habit of looking at equine art across the country for more than 20 years and some of the pieces at this years show could easily stand toe to toe with the best I've ever seen! The really big surprise for me was that most of the pieces were priced (by the artist) far below their gallery value! Buyers, both local and out-of-state, took note of the fact and took their favorite piece home with them. Art lovers who had found bargains in previous years were also back, hoping their preferred artist would exhibit and they would be able to snap up some more bargains.”
Not all pieces were up for grabs at bargain rates however. A noted exception was the oil, “Moonshine,” by artist Jeremiah Epperson which, at $20,000.00 was the highest priced piece in the show. An admirer of the paint horse depicted in the oil painting was over heard to comment in awe, “You can count every hair in the horse's tail!”
While realism was well represented through out the various divisions, whimsy was also present. Cheryl Caldwell's “Curiosity,” an in-your-face perspective of a nosey chestnut took 2 nd in the Acrylic division and Lisa Bone's adorable, comic, clay sculpture, “Doc“ won people's hearts with his happy countenance, and won Lisa the highly sought after tri-color “People's Choice” ribbon as a result.
The shows subject matter was expanded this year to include dogs. Artists whose work clearly showed their love of dogs showed their considerable talents with entries in nearly all of the divisions. Linda Massey's “Magnificent 7,” a beautiful oil on canvas depiction of seven, “so-real-they-looked-like they-might-bark, fox hounds, won her First in the Oil Painting category, while Toni Haigh's “Bringing Them In “ won First in the Acrylic category and “ Patrick Lannan's “They Told Me To Smile” took the First place for Pen & Ink.
In recognition of the hurtles artists face and to encourage their work, WSHE management offered artists who had submitted an entry to the show the opportunity to purchase a small vendor space within the art show area at a significantly reduced cost.
