The Cowboy Entrepreneur
Scott Knudsen is not your ordinary 5th generation Texas cowboy with a business degree. He’s been struck by lightning (in the head, out his arm), played in a mixed doubles tennis tournament at the LA Forum with Billy Jean King and Martina Navitrealova in the 1980s for Yonex, and became an award-winning national sales rep for a Fortune 50 company multiple times.
Headquartered in the scenic Texas Hill Country at his Lightning K Ranch in Fredericksburg, which is known for Foundation Quarter Horses, Scott’s family owns Knudsen Equine Center, Knudsen Horses, and Knudsen Cattle Company. An AQHA Professional Horseman and AQHA Ambassador, who was one day old his first time aboard his dad’s calf roping horse (talk about imprinting!), Scott’s ridden rough stock to race horses, team roped, penned, and sorted, ridden cutting horses, worked rescues, and trained Thoroughbreds to Morgans and mustangs.
As President of the Board for the San Antonio area’s top-rated theater company, which recently produced a sold-out run of “The Sound of Music,” Scott’s helped turned the non-profit’s balance sheet into a $1 million-plus operation. Now stepping forward as one of the horse industry’s strongest advocates, his anything but average life experiences are motivating countless others. Jessica Bedore, PhD, of Sam Houston State University’s equine science program explained, “Much of the horse industry is so traditional, but Scott’s open to new things and changing. It’s really inspiring.”
Featured on Horse Radio Network’s podcast Horses In The Morning in July, Scott discussed the Extreme Trail Horse Association (which he founded and directs) and its growth to a network of 23 destinations in the US and Canada since its 2018 launch. In his new online show, Scott takes viewers behind the scenes at the Mustang Heritage Foundation, San Angelo State Park (site of Texas’ annual Monarch Butterfly Ride), and joins music entertainment pal Derek Spence in a special edition, “From the Saddle to the Stage.”
From creative ideas for rescues to developing new revenue streams for trainers, Scott brings energy and passion to his appearances that don’t involve a new training technique or piece of equipment. A gifted entrepreneur with boundless creativity, Scott brings the best of the West together with business acumen to make the horse world fun and profitable. And, he still rides four horses a day!
