The world-famous Endo the Blind is a 25-year-old Appaloosa gelding that had to have his eyes removed at 13 due to Equine Recurrent Uveitis. Blindness hasn’t stopped him from living a life full of love and adventure.
Morgan and Endo travel throughout the country performing for crowds at liberty and bridleless riding. Endo is a three-time world record holder and a national champion at the highest level in Working Equitation, a discipline that combines upper-level dressage movements with obstacles.
On 29 October 2022, together with his owner, Morgan Wagner, Endo achieved three remarkable record titles:
This is Morgan and Endo’s first time at the Western States Horse Expo. We are thrilled to welcome this incredible and inspiring duo.
Morgan hand-selected Endo when she was just 13 from her grandmother's herd. Morgan says she picked me because I had a different presence than the other foals. Even when I was tiny, apparently I had a strong and unique personality. Morgan chose me when I was only a few months old.
Morgan is almost entirely self-taught, learning what did and didn’t work through trial and error. Morgan believes this approach may have actually helped Endo in many ways because it is the same technique she has used so effectively following Endo’s eye removal.
Endo was diagnosed at 8 years old with Equine Recurrent Uveitis, glaucoma, and cataracts. Despite all the veterinary remedies attempted, Endo was often in a tremendous amount of pain that affected his ability to eat. After many years of careful care and managing the pain, Endo experienced a damaging flare-up in the right eye, and the decision was made to remove the eye to lessen his pain. Endo’s left eye was removed around 6 months after the first.
Morgan's patience and relationship with Endo following the first surgery helped Endo adapt quickly to being sightless. Months working with Endo with blindfolds, helping him learn to listen to voice and touch commands, helped ease the transition into sightlessness.
For almost a decade, Endo has done the impossible, as he can do anything a sighted horse can do, from trail rides to jumping, to performing liberty work, and participating in any other new experience that becomes available. Endo and Morgan are crowd favorites at Expos all across the United States and Canada.
